Why the theme The Stone Age makes a good book

An adventure that suits the child

The Stone Age is exciting because it's so different and yet so human. No stone houses, no shops, no electricity – but children who played, families who sat round the fire and someone who painted animals on the wall of a cave. A book about the Stone Age lets your child dress in furs, learn to make a fire and watch mammoths pass by on the plain. It raises questions about how people managed without everything we have today, and your child gets to be the one who finds the answer with what's to hand: stone, wood, bone and courage.

Life around the fire

In a book about the Stone Age your child can go out gathering berries and roots, help move the camp when the mammoths wander on or find a new cave before winter. Perhaps the fire has gone out and your child must learn to make a new one, or a young wolf has followed the group and won't go away. It's a time for cunning and teamwork, when everyone is needed. Or the group follows the tracks of a herd of wild horses to a place where the water runs clean.

What will your child paint on the wall?

Let your child decide what gets painted on the cave wall in the book: a pet, someone in the family, an animal they love. Write in whether your child likes building dens, collecting stones or toasting marshmallows over a fire with a grown-up – it all fits the Stone Age. Brothers, sisters and cousins can form a little tribe of their own, and a grandma who knows every mushroom in the woods becomes the wise one of the group.

For the youngest listener it's about fire, animals and snuggling under the fur. Children between three and five enjoy a clear day in the camp and a night by the fire. From six there can be a problem solved with ingenuity, like a mammoth standing in the way or a river that has to be crossed. Ten-year-olds can have a longer trek towards a new land.

Tools of stone and bone

People in the Stone Age made knives and spearheads from flint, a stone that gets sharp edges when flakes are knocked off it. From bone they made needles, and with those they sewed hides together into clothes. The cave paintings were made with charcoal and coloured earth, among other things. Try drawing with a piece of charcoal on a big sheet of paper, and make your own handprint beside it. The dinosaurs had vanished many millions of years before the first humans appeared, so they don't belong here.

Your child is the hero

You fill in the child's name, age and what they like, and upload a photo. The story about the Stone Age is written for your very own child, and the thirteen pictures and the cover are drawn from the photo in the style you choose. Brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents or the pet can come along, up to five characters. If you would like to include something that has happened lately, a trip or a lost tooth, just write it and it is woven in.
